Van Morrison

I’ve always liked Van Morrison.  In the 70’s I caught him in concert in Vancouver as a warm up act; tonight I saw him on PBS. Since the 70’s I’ve always enjoyed his music for it’s honest feel. It fills in when the metal becomes tiring and the pop seems insipid. I’m fond of gospel but it can become forumulaic and it is limited by nature of its purpose. Van Morrison however, does manage to touch a spiritual chord and seems to have always had a fondness for my favorite poet, W. B. Yeats.

Per Wikipedia: “In 1993 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003. In 2000, Morrison ranked #25 on American cable music channel VH1’s list of its 100 greatest artists of rock and roll, and in 2004, Rolling Stone Magazine ranked Van Morrison 42nd on their list of The Immortals: 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.[4][5] Paste Magazine ranked him 20th in their list of 100 Greatest Living Songwriters in 2006 and Q Magazine ranked him 22nd on their list of 100 Greatest Singers in April 2007.

On the PBS show I was startled by how much older he seemed.  Tomorrow I’ll look again in the mirror, I’m sure that he fully showed the same signs of aging that I do.  His voice was full though, and he managed each set with the wisdom of experience. The audience was captivated.  I’ll be watching for a concert in Phoenix soon.
